As Jess and I have mentioned a few times over the last few months, this weekend we are running a half marathon with our dad. He is in his 60s and running his first half.
I know that other runners can agree with me about this – there is something special about sharing the running experience with a first timer. There is an energy that first timers have – the nervous anticipation, the excitement and the emotion. All of this is contagious and sometimes I feel that those simple feelings – the ones that made us love running in the first place – are lost during the day-to-day, month-to-month, year-to-year training that comes with being a seasoned runner.
I experienced this last year when I joined our oldest sister, CJ, for her first half marathon in Chicago. Seeing the running experience through her eyes reignited me. I immediately signed up for and ran another half marathon just a few weeks later.

I am sure that many of you can agree – there is something special about being a part of the running experience with a first timer. And I am certain that supporting them makes the experience that much better for them as well. So, in anticipation of this weekend’s race, my favorite fit today is sharing a race day with a first timer.
Good luck to all runners who are racing this weekend. And a special good luck to my dad!!! See you in Michigan, Jess!
