Hello! I missed a few weeks of blogging as I was in South Africa, but I’m back, and I’m working on my recap of the Cape Town marathon and of our 9 days in South Africa. Stop by soon for those detailed posts.
But first, here’s my recap of the week of the marathon!
Monday: Birthday run! 5-ish miles in the pouring rain. What a way to celebrate my 3rd birthday in London, in very London-esque running conditions!
Tuesday: Last mini-workout before Cape Town: warm-up, 6 minutes at marathon pace, 4 min jog, 12 min at marathon pace, 4 min jog, 6 min at marathon pace for 6.2 miles total before work. Legs felt heavy but that’s part of the taper right?
Wednesday: Rest from running.
Thursday: 5 miles easy with Ruth along the canal.
I worked most of the day before we took the underground out to Heathrow for a 12-hour overnight flight from London to Cape Town. I did all the tricks to try to sleep well on the flight: solid exercise before the flight, nice long shower at home, a glass of wine at the airport, then we settled in on the flight with melatonin (which, by the way, you can’t buy in London!), compression socks, and the comfiest outfit I could find. I think the melatonin helped, since its not something I normally take, and I slept reasonably well.
Friday: Morning arrival in Cape Town, South Africa.
A 3-mile run to shake off the legs from the long flight.
After the run/shower/breakfast, we walked to the expo to pick up our race packets.
Saturday: Another morning run in Cape Town, 3 miles.
We spent the rest of the day exploring. We made a visit to the penguin colony on Boulder’s Beach, drove to the Cape of Good Hope (where we saw ostriches and a baboon wandering around), and then drove Chapman’s Peak scenic drive (gorgeous!)
Sunday: The Cape Town Marathon in South Africa. Marathon #46!
Guess what? I finished- not in the 3:4X time I felt that I was trained for, but I snuck in under 4 hours and had a lot of fun. And I completed a marathon on a new continent!
Longevity in running combined with a continued love of the marathon- those are my primary goals. I’ll share a full detailed recap of the marathon and my experience; Cape Town is in the running to become a World Major, the first one on the continent, so you may be interested in running it in the future (and I highly recommend Cape Town as a place for a holiday!)
Summary: 49 miles of running, minimal strength. Lots of rest, finishing with a 42km tour of Cape Town!

I’m glad you liked Cape Town!
You actually passed me on your Friday run (around 2.15pm) just before the Radisson Blu
Looking forward to reading your recap!
You did!! You should have said hello! Yes we loved Cape Town, stunning! We will definitely be back, the flight isn’t that bad and no jet lag! We spent two nights in Franschhoek and two night back in Camps Bay after the race, hiked Table Mountain via India Venster (so fun) and Lions Head. You are lucky to live in such a beautiful place!
What a great trip–I hope you celebrated your birthday in style after the race. Looking forward to reading the recap!
Thank you Wendy! It was a fab place for a celebration!
Happy birthday!!! Congrats on the sub-4 marathon — I know it wasn’t what you trained for but it’s amazing!
Thank you Melissa!
I’m excited to hear the “full” story 😉 Looks like you had a great week in prepping for the big day.
thanks Kim!
Now that’s a fun way to celebrate your birthday! Can’t wait to read the recap. Looks like a gorgeous time to visit Cape Town
Thanks Deb, it was fab!
Congratulations! And, Happy Birthday! Your photos from Cape Town are beautiful- I can’t wait to hear more about the trip and of course, all about the marathon.
Thank you Jenny!
Happy belated birthday! It looks like you had a great time in Capetown. Your ability to do back-to-back marathons is amazing! Looking forward to the full recap.
Thanks Coco! I don’t know if June to October is back to back though!
Congrats to another marathon and your first on the African continent! And happy belated birthday!
Is there something with melatonin that isn’t legal on the British isles? I’ve never seen it in Ireland either (but never looked for it either), but came across melatonin (and valeriana) tablets in Italy, so I bought some to try. I haven’t noticed a big difference but haven’t taken them a lot.
I only take them on long plane rides, but I do think they help! Not sure why they aren’t allowed when so many other things are allowed here!
Congrats on completing your 46th marathon, Jessie! I look forward to reading your recap.
Thank you Debbie!
What an awesome trip. And happy birthday.
I had a friend there at the same time. She visited the vineyards.
How fun! I hope she had a lovely time!
Looks like a great adventure linked in with a marathon.
The best kind of adventures!
I am surprised to hear the Cape Town is a contender for being a Major when I just learned last year that Sydney was too! Shouldn’t it be limited so I won’t need to spend a million dollars traveling? LOL! I’m looking forward to your recap. It looked like a great trip.
Haha, right? especially Sydney!
Glad to see you’ve got through it all OK, well done. I look forward to your recap.
Thanks Liz!
Happy Birthday! Looks like you had a fantastic time in Cape Town. Can’t wait to hear more about the marathon!
Thanks Marcia!
