After the whirlwind visit to the U.S. last week, this week was pretty low-key, with a focus on getting back to a London routine & training for the Dublin marathon in 13 weeks (and the Medoc marathon in just 5 weeks! Did I mention that everyone runs Medoc in “fancy dress” – i.e. a costume- and the theme this year is Gastronomy. I need to figure out our costumes! Any suggestions? I want it to be something that is still easy to run in, particularly as it will be hot there.)
Here’s how training went this past week:
Monday: Rest day from running, lower body Caroline Girvan workout after work + core
Tuesday: 7.4 miles before work with 3 miles of tempo effort in the middle, core after work
Wednesday: Run commute (4.65 miles) plus a social 5k with some people at the office through St. James/Green parks, 7.8 miles total.
Thursday: 6 mile run before work followed by core
Friday: 7 mile run before work with Ruth, followed up by upper body with Caroline Girvan on youtube. I joined a few colleagues to go to the Barbie movie in the evening. It was so great! We all really enjoyed it. Sadly, no pictures of our pink outfits!
Saturday: 18.5 mile long run- I started out going west on the canal to Paddington; I continued until I hit about 6 miles and then turned around.
Apparently I was nearly to a park called Wormwood Scrubs, I’ll have to check it out next time. Then I went back to Paddington, got a little lost, and figured out to link up to Hyde park.
A lap of Hyde park + Kensington Gardens, back on Oxford street to Regent’s park and home for 18.5 miles. It was a long one, all by myself! I listened to a mix of podcasts to start (one about Barbie and one about Scam Influencers!) and then the Taylor Swift ERAS tour setlist to bring it home. I took two gels, carried Liquid IV, and stopped one to buy a bottle of Lucozade (UK Gatorade). It was sunny and 75 degrees by the end.
I was pretty tired after that long of a run, so the rest of Saturday was relatively low key, other than a decent walk with the pups. Dustin is still nursing the bum hamstring and building back to running, so he had taken already taken the pups to the Heath for some good zoomies. Spoiled dogs 🙂
Sunday: I ran 6 miles, with 5 with Dustin (and Ruth.)
Summary: 53 miles of running, 2 days of strength training, attempt at daily core
I recently have been running in the Hoka Mach X and thought I was loving them, but they have a lower heel drop than the New Balance 1080’s. I started to feel some pain in my achilles after the 18.5 miler, so I’m rotating those shoes out for a bit to see if it heals up with my regular shoe. That’s not an injury I want to repeat! I dealt with it in 2020 and it was a doozy.
Just for fun, here’s a weekly picture of Ruth looking regal at Bruce’s doggy daycare!
I’m linking up with Running on the Fly and Confessions of a Mother Runner; check out their blogs to connect with other fitness bloggers for workout ideas and inspiration!
Nice work getting right back into your run routine. Looks like you are in a good training place. I tried lower drop shoes a few years back and my Achilles was not happy either. I figured, why mess with a good thing
Totally true! I thought I liked the Hokas’ fit, but my Achilles said no thank you for now.
LOL at Ruth looking regal . . . on a tire. But cute photo! Great job as always, especially after the travel.
A marathon in costume? Who DOES that? Good luck! I am not a costume person at all (if you couldn’t tell).
Regal…on a tire is right, ha!
I guess most everyone wears a costume for Medoc, so we have to embrace it!
Right back at it! You’re ambitious with those two marathons back-to-back, but you’ve got a great routine with your (mostly) daily miles. Great pic of Miss Ruth, her royal highness 😉
Well, I am not racing Medoc, just time on feet!
Her royal highness is right! What a princess.
Ha ha… Ruth looks VERY regal in that picture! Nice job on the 18 miler, and btw that does NOT sound like a lot of fuel! Janae (Hungry Runner Girl) always talks about how taking in more calories really helps her now for marathons. Not that you asked for any advice, but I wonder if taking in one more gel during an 18 miler would help you. I’m currently running in the New Balance 880s and I like them- but I’m very tempted by those Hokas- it looks like a nice wide toe box! I’ve never tried the Mach X.… Read more »
Hi Jenny! I use 5-6 gels in a marathon- I think that’s what Janae has said, but I don’t take quite as much during training, but I did have a 3rd with me that I should have taken and I definitely could benefit from a bit more! Will take 3 next week 🙂
I like the 880’s, but they have a higher heel drop than the Mach X, so if you have had issues with your achilles, you might have an issue with the Mach X! They are only 5mm vs. 8mm.
Great week for you and I love that picture of Ruth!! I’m glad to hear Dustin is getting back to running.
My son has a hat that is a platter with a Thanksgiving turkey on it. He wears it with a military outfit and calls himself Captain Thanksgiving. Crazy college kids, I know. Seriously I have no suggestions because running in a costume is hard!
He’s happy to be building back to running, though slowly!
Captain Thanksgiving, I love it! I want to find a costume that is relatively easy to still run in, especially since it will be hot in Bordeaux in September!
lower heel drop helped my neuroma… I’ve since gone up to 5 from zero…
looks like your training is gong well… hope it continues. as always love your pix.
Everyone’s body is so different! I’m glad the lower heel drop helped you! I’m going to try to still rotate the Hokas in sometimes, but probably not for the long long runs!
Ruth is an absolute queen. Look at her.
Ugh. Sorry about that pain. Hopefully switching shoes takes care of it. And I’m sorry Dustin is still having issues 🙁
Great week. I love that Paddington statue.
Thanks Jenn- Dustin is glad to be building back, but I know he wishes he could run as much as before, but at least he’s running!
The Paddington area is worth a visit if you’re ever here!
Oh no, I hope the change in shoes helps with the Achilles pain.
Yes, Ruth is looking quite regal in that picture! 🙂
Thank you Debbie- it does seem to have been the shoes, as I switched back to my New Balance 1080’s and am feeling good!
You had a great week of running! Sounds like you were all over the place on that long run! Good call on swapping out that shoe. Oooh a fancy gastronomy costume….can’t wait to see what you come up with! Ruth is owning it! Haha!
You can see a lot of a city within 18.5 miles 🙂
Struggling to come up with a runnable costume….need ideas! 🙂
excellent mileage! and 18.5miles already on your own! I think Dublin is kind of hilly, is it like that too in London (I’ve honestly run only once I think in London, in Kensington)? I’ve only done a half in Dublin, will you also be running through Phoenix Park?
I love that photo of Ruth! so majestic!
Hmm, I’ve heard mixed things on Dublin, some say it is flat and fast, some say it has one “heartbreak hill” of sorts! The full marathon does indeed go through Phoenix Park!
London has some hills, especially Hampstead/north where we live. A lot of the parks that I run like Regent’s and Hyde are very flat though.
Ha – Wormwood Scrubs is also a prison!! Well done on your long run. And I quailed at the mention of lucozade – I had a colonoscopy the week before last (got the all-clear immediately) and I kept myself hydrated on orange lucozade on my prep day and never want to see another bottle again!! Hope the achilles has calmed down, and you can alternate shoes to be more comfortable.
