Happy New Year, friends! I shared a little recap of my year earlier this week, catch up on that post HERE.
I wish you all the best for 2022.
The final week of 2021 was a lot of treadmill running due to dangerously low temperatures/ wind chill advisories in the Twin Cities. There’s no shame in running on the treadmill- it’s still running, it’s still beneficial, and it still counts. 🙂 However, it doesn’t make for a very interesting weekly recap, ha!
Monday: 6 treadmill miles before work, 8:45 min/mile
Stacked up several core classes on the Peloton app after work: 2×10 min core for runners with Becs + 15 min stacking stuffer with Callie = 35 minutes of core.
Tuesday: Long treadmill workout! 20 min easy, 15 min at 8:15, 3 min jog, 15 min at 8, 3 min jog, 10 min at 7:45, 3 min jog, 10 min at 7:30, cool down to 11 miles. I generally can tough out the treadmill, but this one just felt…long. But I got it done.
3×10 min arms & shoulders + 10 min core on Peloton app after work
Wednesday: Another long treadmill run, 10 easy miles, 9:20 min/mile, 30 minute yoga flow after work on the Peloton app.
Thursday: With a bit of a ‘warm-up’ in the forecast, I split up my run, 5 miles on the the treadmill before work, and then another 5 with my friend Vicki outside over lunch. The temperature was about 15 degrees, feels like 5 degrees. 9:40 min/mile average. Trails were ‘greasy’ with snow, which definitely adds a challenge. It was lovely to run outside though, especially with a friend.
Friday: After successfully splitting up my run the day before, I decided to do the same for my long run. I had 5 miles easy to warm-up, so I did those outside with Vicki.
Then I came home, changed out of ALL the layers into shorts and a tank, and finished the workout portion on the treadmill, which was 10x(1/2 mile at marathon effort, 1/2 mile easy) + 1 mile cool-down. 16 miles total for the day.
The idea of this last long run workout was supposed to be to really “feel out” marathon effort, without looking at my watch. But that doesn’t really work when doing it on the treadmill since obviously I know exactly how fast I’m going. So…not really a success, but what do you do? Winter running in Minnesota, right? I knew I couldn’t really do marathon effort in the cold and snow and my coach agreed that the treadmill was a better option for this one.
I think I need to move somewhere warmer!
Our NYE was very low-key. I think I made it to 10:30 pm….close enough! Hung out with my two favorite party animals.
Saturday: Saturday was my rest day, which was grand, as it was -12 actual temp with “feels like” of -31. Yowsa. We did bundle up the pups for a short walk. It is that time of year that they need to wear their booties. Vizslas aren’t exactly cold weather pups!
The sun was shining and it wasn’t too bad, but I was happy to stay inside the rest of the day, cleaning and organizing. Nothing wrong with starting out the year with a rest day. Just as important as all the miles earlier in the week.
I did do some lower body + core on the Peloton app, but otherwise a must needed rest day from running.
Sunday: Another brutally cold day in Minnesota meant more miles on the treadmill. 8 miles, 9 min/mile average. Sweaty mess. All this treadmill time is a good opportunity to test out all the hot weather clothes!
So much treadmill time means a lot of TV! I’ve been watching a few documentaries (The Alpinist, Murderer Next Door, Dead Asleep, Explained) and some other random stuff (The Great, Yellowjackets, Station Eleven). Running out of options though- open to suggestions, though I feel like I’ve watched it all at this point, ha!
Summary: 61.5 miles, all but 10 on the treadmill.
And that’s a wrap on training two weeks out from marathon #38! As I mentioned in my 2021 recap, I’ll be running Boston again in April, which will hopefully be marathon #39. I feel like I should do something grand for #40, right? To be determined..
I’m linking up with Running on the Fly and Confessions of a Mother Runner as part of their Weekly Rundown. Check it out!
Ok. Booties on the doggos is my jam. They are so cute! And so snuggly. I love them.
You are so beyond ready foor Charleston. I’m so excited for you. Your training is going well and it will totally pay off!
Haha, I am glad you love the booties Jenn 🙂 Ruth and Matilda have come to tolerate them, I do they they really help protect the paws in the brutal cold.
I didn’t realize it was that cold up by you! We’re pretty temperate right now, but it is supposed to get colder this week. That’s the bad part of winter. I don’t mind the snow but the cold weather, ugh. I just ordered more hand and toe warmers, lol. Cocoa would no way wear the booties. She’s stubborn like that.
Nice week of running for you and I think running on the TM inside will actually benefit you for the warmer weather down south!
I know, what a difference there is right now between Chicago and Minneapolis! This kind of cold is downright dangerous…
Ruth and Matilda have learned to tolerate the booties, but it takes a few times each year before they remember how to walk in them!
wow your weather sure is challenging this week! Those temps would definitely send me to the treadmill as well! Way to get it done this week. The booties on the pups are so cute. I looked at yellow jackets and could not tell if it was too scary? Do you like it?
I tolerate scarier stuff on the treadmill for some reason- there was a haunted show on Netflix- the Haunting of Hill House- and I could only watch it on the treadmill! So YellowJackets doesn’t seem too bad yet. I thought Station Eleven was scarier because its about a pandemic!
Brrr… that’s all I feel when I read this.
Love the holiday photo.
Can’t believe how fast time is going by.
April will be here before you know it, I’m wishing winter away.
Yes… #40 should be big and #50 real big!
Thank you Darlene!
#50 is still awhile away, but 40 is coming up!
Woah dang, that is some cold weather! With the race being in Charleston do you think you’ll have any issue with the warmer weather? I know we (all runners in Toledo!) are always pretty beat when the first warm day of running comes after the cold weather. I’ve got a ton of TV shows on my DVR to catch up on. I am looking forward to some treadmill time!
My coach had actually wanted me to do more treadmill running to acclimate to the heat a bit, so hopefully it will help me in two weeks that I have done a lot of it!
That is serious cold weather! I’d rather run long on the treadmill than stack multple core workouts. I max out at 20 min core, and usually stick to 10!
I have to change — or at least peel off layers — between walking Scooby and my workouts. And I wonder why I have less time to actually workout. 😉
Boston is such an epic marathon.
Can’t wait to see what you pick for your 40th!
It really is early for this sort of cold too….climate change, yikes!
I like about 15 minutes of core and then I get bored 🙂 But I am trying to do at least a 5 minute class every day.
I saw all the crazy cold temps up north! Yikes! It seems sorta (?) early for those extremes, but I guess it is January, LOL. Wow…just a couple more weeks until #39 😉
We usually have a week like this in February or late January, but it really was kind of early for this kind of cold. Not fun!
Wowza did you have some cold temps! Awesome job getting all those mill miles done! Yes, your 40th should be a grand one – can’t wait to see what you decide!
Thank you Michelle! The treadmill is my friend here in Minnesota!
You did such a great job working around the snow and cold. Kudos! That is not easy. Your party animals are so stinking cute in their boots. I’ve yet to get Ozzy to wear his. He shakes them off! Haha!
Ruth and Matilda are not big fans of the booties, but I think they kinda appreciate how they help in the extreme cold!
One word: BRR! That is seriously cold weather. Good thing you have a treadmill! I’ll have to go back and read your year recap. But it sounds like it ended on a high note- love your NYE “party” with the pups!
SO glad I have a treadmill 🙂
Wow, so cold! I didn’t manage to stay up on NYE either, was woken by my husband and the fireworks at the right moment then went back to sleep! I spent New Year’s Day morning volunteering at my parkrun, so all good there. Happy New Year and happy taper for the marathon!
Sounds like a lovely New Year’s Day Liz! Cheers!
Definitely nothing wrong with starting the year with a rest day, especially with those temps and the amount of miles you ran last wee,. I can imagine that cold — but not running in it! And we didn’t even walk Bandit today, and it was just a “feels like 8F” day. Tried booties a few times on Chester & Lola & it never really seemed to work — but it sure was entertaining (although not trying to keep track of all the booties that fell off it seemed continually). Very nice job getting it done. I may like my treadmill… Read more »
Its pretty entertaining when they first put on the booties, but then they seem to adjust and get used to them 🙂
When we tried them — a few times — admittedly cheap ones — they just kept coming off. And we kept having to backtrack because we wouldn’t notice at first. And like you, at the time, we had 2 dogs. So we finally gave up. They survived.
Those booties for the dog are soo cute! We had very mild temps this weekend (50 degrees) but of course today it’s freezing.
I always spend NYE at home and usually stay up to watch the ball drop and then go to bed immediately after, lol.
50 degrees! So jealous. Your NYE sounds pretty great to me 🙂 I love sleep.
I can’t even imagine weather that cold, but we lived in both Logan, Utah and Denver, Colorado and I remember so
I love the girls booties, but it doesn’t look like they like them very much.
Your marathon will be here before you know it and you seem ready. Happy tapering!
I am not totally surprised that Colorado and Utah don’t get quite as cold. More snow though!
Treadmill solidarity! 🙂 I’m hooked on 13 Reasons Why – it’s bonkers and is great for passing the time on the ‘mill. Next on my list is Emily in Paris! I didn’t know Station Eleven was a show?! I read the book a few months ago and it was wild. Love the pic of Ruth in her booties! Happy 2022, Jessie!
I watched 13 Reasons Why! It was a good treadmill show.
Yes, Station Eleven is on HBO. I wish I would have read the book first, my sister Cresta said it was great. I read another Emily St. Mandel book, the Glass Hotel, that was pretty good; I think I remember from your instagram that you read it too!
