It went from 70 degrees last week to regular winter weather this week…you just never know what you’ll get these days! The weather made running a bit more challenging this week; here’s how things worked out when pursuing the right fit!
Monday: 4 miles with Ruth the pup, 8:30 min/mile. One last run in shorts before the weather turned.
Virtual 1:1 Discover Strength after work.
Tuesday: 8 miles with my friends Christie and Julie before work, 9:20 min/mile. I wore my new Oiselle Firecracker tights that are highly reflective!
I was very glad I got the run done early, as it snowed the rest of the day.
Wednesday: Workout Wednesday!
20 minutes easy, 5x 3 minutes, getting progressively faster, 1 minute recovery in between, cool-down to 7 miles. On the treadmill, since the trails were too slippery post-snowstorm.
I watched the 2012 movie “The Impossible” while I ran, which was based on the tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004. Kind of a crazy true story!
Virtual 1:1 Discover Strength session after work.
Thursday: 8 easy miles with Christie and Julie again before work. Trails weren’t too slippery. We did start a little later than normal to get a bit more light so we could actually see where the slippery spots were!
Friday: 5 miles on the treadmill before work, then a bonus 2.8 miles with Ruth- i.e. a loop of Lake of the Isles with two coworkers (and Ruth) as a “networking run” over lunch.
Virtual 1:1 Discover Strength training session after work. Full day!
Saturday: Long run Saturday! I was supposed to do 45 minutes moderate within this run, but the trails were just too slippery to run fast. Instead, our small Saturday group kept it super easy, 11.2 miles at a 9:25 min/mile pace.
Later that afternoon, we had an obedience class for Ruth at the Canine Coach. It was “Level 1.5: I’m so excited!” i.e. its supposed to work on impulse control! The class is very small and spaced out, masks required, and no interactions with the other dogs/people; it felt pretty safe.
We did Level 1 Obedience when she was still quite young, maybe too young, so this is a great option for her to refine some skills, as she definitely needs to work on her impulse control! After the class, we took the pups for a 2 mile walk.
With Covid cases exploding in Minneapolis, what limited outdoor social life we did have has ceased, though really that went away with the warm weather.
Honestly, our behavior won’t change much as regulations come back, as we were already staying home and trying our best to do our part to stop the spread. It’s out of control and very scary; I’ve mentioned before that my older sister is an ob/gyn and she is quite stressed about the situation at our hospitals.
Stay home please! Mask up.
Saturday night we got takeout from Young Joni in NE Mpls. Delicious. Glad we have so many great takeout places and happy to do my part to keep them going through what is going to be a long winter.
Sunday: Dustin, Ruth (our younger vizsla) and I ran 5.2 miles, 8:45 min/mile average.
Then we picked up Matilda (the senior vizsla) for a bonus 10 min/mile with her.
Summary: I hit 50 miles again! 52.5 to be exact. It feels good to be running around the same level that I was prior to the Achilles injury. 3 virtual strength training sessions. A solid week in fitness.
I received this thought piece from Oiselle this week; SO good, particularly the piece by Kara Goucher. Loved it.
Stop by on Tuesday, as I’m sharing a post about “My Favorite Running Brands” as part of a link-up with Zenaida and Kim!
That’s it for the week!
I’m linking up with Running on the Fly and Confessions of a Mother Runner Check it out!
Yes it has occured to me that nothing will really change for us if we go back to a shut down…. Congrats on crushing 50 this week!
Thanks Becket!
Well, that means you’re doing the right things right now to help curb the spread! 🙂
Brrrr snow! I know winter is around the corner, but I’m just not ready for it! I really enjoyed our little summer interlude. Last week when I was on the trails, I ran into the woman with the vizla who I always see. We introduced ourselves, turns out she’s from Minnesota, lol!
I also received the Oiselle literature and it was really nice! I like what she’s doing with the company. A lot.
Wendy, that’s so awesome, a vizsla connection 🙂 How old is hers? They are the best dogs for active people…too funny she’s also from Minnesota!
Yes, the Oiselle thought piece was GREAT. Glad you enjoyed it too!
I am so glad to read that your achilles is feeling so good! Nothing will change for me with more lockdowns except for the fact that I have gotten my hair cut. Congrats on your great mileage week
Good point- I did get my haircut too. But the other places I have gone, like PT appointments, will still be open since I believe they are considered essential.
I do laugh to myself when I see “lockdown round 2” – I literally never left the first lockdown, lol.
The weather here totally changed as well! We went from 70 degrees last week to nothing but rain this past week. Awesome mileage this week!
Haha, same! I’ve been in one long lockdown…now its just a cold and dark lockdown 🙂
Although the Covid resurgence comes as no surprise, I’m alarmed by the rapid increase in positivity rate pretty much everywhere. Great miles for you this week!
Agreed. The exponential growth is incredible.
Oh, my…those reflective tights! I’m gonna have to investigate those a bit on their sight! I saw all the snow Minnesota got…hard to believe it’s already about that time of year. I hear ya on the layering…I’ve been on the bike so much, it’s odd to be switching to “running” layers now.
When light shines on the tights they are VERY reflective! I love them.
I know what you mean about not much changing. We did a few outdoor activities this summer but not much. Nice job with getting your mileage back up to where it was before your injury!
Thanks Lisa!
Hi Jessie, I was wondering… Do you have a recommendation for a coat or coats to use on your dogs when running or walking outside once it gets colder? Our dog loves to run, but has a thin coat. Thanks for any help!
Hi Michelle! We have had good luck with Ruffwear. Vizslas have thin coats too! We have a few fancier jackets, but Ruffwear’s are more athletic for running. Let me know what you end up with!
Thank you!
Oh, I love those sunrise views! So gorgeous! That tweet is spot on! Virginia is tightening some rules, but nothing that will impact us — limiting indoor dining capacity, how late alcohol can be served, and limiting gatherings to 25. None of which we’ve been doing.
Same. I know I’m fortunate to say that my life can continue as is, working from home and all. But I also chose not to go to bars/weddings/funerals, etc.
Oh no to snow! Thankfully no more snow here, yet, but getting towards winter like temps. But it’s the middle of November, after all!
So odd, the fabric from the Oiselle tights looks like the same reflective fabric Skirt Sports used. They really must be the same! Luckily I rarely run in the dark.
Sounds like a really solid week. My heart goes out to all the healthcare workers. I think I’m stressed — it’s nothing compared to what they’re going through.
Congrats on getting back to your happy mileage again! Those tights are awesome. I heard today that our office will be having more people work at home again to get down to 50% workers in the office. But of course IT is not included (me!) so boo, I gotta keep going in to work. I wouldn’t mind working from home for a little bit!
Great job on your mileage this week!
I have those same tights! Thanks to working from home I have been able to get out running once the sun is out. Friday morning I will be out earlier to run 4.8 miles for my birthday.
The weather change was awful. I like running in shorts.
Not going to lie. I would love a little bit of snow.
Our numbers are increasing, but it seems like we went through our second wave already? It’s hard to know what map or dashboard to follow anymore. We are like you – we’ve already been pretty limited, so things won’t change too much.
You got in a good week! We had similar crazy weather with it going from 75° to blustery cold (not as cold as you experienced and no snow, though).
Stay safe!
