Here we are, week 4 of sheltering-in-place, running solo, working from home, and virtual strength training sessions. I hope you’re hanging in there, staying healthy, sane, and as active as you can!
For each of us, the level of activity looks different. For me, I’m still training as though marathons will be back on the horizon this summer, even though we really don’t know if that’s the case. I’m also focusing on strength training 3 times a week. Besides, its the physical activity that is keeping me sane more than ever these days!
I do have a “race” on the schedule now- the McKirdy Mile Race Series. My coach, Esther, works for McKirdy Trained, and recommended it. It’s a series of three 1-mile races (virtual of course), with the intent of getting faster with each. More information here.
Here’s a summary of how I found ‘the right fit’ during this crazy time…
Monday: 8.25 miles at 9:15 min/mile average before work. Picked up Ruth (our vizsla pup) for a mile at the end.
I swear, I see a bald eagle on either Bde Mka Ska or Lake Harriet every morning! Between eagle sitings and the loons calling in the early morning, it doesn’t seem like I live in the city.
Virtual 1:1 training session with a Discover Strength trainer after work.
Tuesday: I woke up to an intense storm and wasn’t in the right mindset for the treadmill. So, for the first time in the whole quarantine, I ran AFTER work.
Dustin joined me to try to pace me for my workout, but between the crowds on the trails and my anxiety about the crowds, the workout was a bit of a bust. I can’t blame everyone for being outside; it was the first 70 degree sunny day in Minneapolis this year! But its hard to social distance when there’s so many people, even with the roads around the lakes closed to car traffic….
My workout was 3 miles easy, 40 minutes of 3 minutes hard, 2 minutes recovery, 2 minutes harder, 3 minutes recovery, 1 mile easy to 9 miles total at a 8:55 min/mile. I usually walked part of the recovery and Dustin turned his Garmin off for the walking, so he had 8.7 miles at an 8:25 min/mile average. I have to admit, it was lovely to get some sunshine and really break a sweat!
Wednesday: 6.6 miles at a 9:50 min/mile average before work.
I struggle to go from an evening run, especially a workout, to an early morning run, so I was definitely dragging on this one. I listened to my body and went as slow as necessary to feel good. I picked up Ruth at the end for a mile. Dustin said she was crying by the door by the leash when I left. Clearly she is enjoying morning runs!
I did another 1:1 virtual training session with a Discover Strength trainer after work.
Afterwards, I found a surprise message on the sidewalk from my friend Christie. Thanks friend!
Thursday: 5 miles before work, 4 miles after. My schedule called for a mid-week long run of 10-11 miles, but I split it up into two and only got to 9 total. Close enough.
That evening, my run club friends and I did a virtual trivia night via Quizmaster Trivia. It was pretty fun- even the Queen stopped by!
Friday: Technically, I had the day off of work for Good Friday, but I still worked a bit in the morning. Then I ran 4 miles + 1 with Ruth, 8:55 min/mile average, followed by a 1:1 virtual training session with a Discover Strength trainer over lunch. 3rd time this week! It feels really good to keep up with strength training in addition to all the running.
Saturday: It was a beautiful morning for a run and Dustin said he’d run with me! Yay!
I actually think it was only 36 degrees when we started, but it warmed up quickly and I was down to a tank top and shorts by the end.
My long run workout was 60 minutes easy, 20 minutes at goal marathon pace (8-8:15), 10 minutes easy, 20 minutes at goal marathon pace (8-8:15), 20 minutes easy.
14.8 miles total at an 8:45 min/mile average. I picked up Ruth for the cool down.
That evening, I actually put on jeans and left the house (for something other than running!) We got takeout from Pig Ate My Pizza as well as a few crowlers from their brewery. Delicious!
That evening we watched the movie Uncut Gems with Adam Sandler. Anyone watched that one? Ahh, so stressful!
Sunday: After a beautiful sunny 60 degree day on Saturday, we woke up to snow and wind. Hard to believe that on Saturday, we sat outside to enjoy dinner on the deck and then Sunday we had snow!
I decided to just do my run on the treadmill. 6 miles easy.
Summary: 3 strength training sessions, 59 miles of running
In dog news, there has been a daily battle over the cozy cove; when one dog gets up, the other one zips in there to steal her spot!
I had to cave and order a second one, even though we have plenty of dog beds around the house. I got an email from Snoozer Pets that they were no longer shipping due to the pandemic, but I must have ordered it just in time, as it arrived this week. The dogs are so happy to have two cozy coves now!
I really hope all of you are staying healthy and safe during this stressful time. It’s great to have the ability to stay connected virtually and support each other; this link-up hosted by Running on the Fly and Confessions of a Mother Runner ‘s is a great way to do so! Check it out below:
I like the idea of the mile race series a lot! One of my goals this year is to get my mile time down, so I’ll be working on that after my virtual half next week. I’ll think about this one, the only reason why I wouldn’t sign up is so that I can get a longer run in on the weekends.
Yes, I figure a mile race will be a good challenge right now! I hate pushing myself that hard though, haha!
Good luck on your virtual half!
#allthemiles! The dogs are constantly going back & forth between beds. Bandit usually gets the one he wants, he’s the alpha. It’s funny, Lola climbs up the steps then suddenly realizes he’s in the bed already. Silly girl.
Our weather was flip flopped to yours. Yesterday was really nasty, today isn’t exactly nice, but it’s nicer.Tomorrow looks to be a washout.
Haha, the dynamics between the pups is entertaining, right? I swear sometimes Ruth will lure Matilda out to the living room by pretending there’s something cool going on and then zip back into the cozy cove! But now there are two of them and they are very happy!
The McKirdy Mile Race Series sounds like a fun challenge! I love that there are so many virtual challenges to help keep motivate us as we workout from home for the next few weeks.
I guess it should be no surprise that it snowed today since 2020 is pretty insane, lol.
Agreed! It’s awesome with all the virtual challenges and virtual workout options! Glad this didn’t happen 10 years ago before we had the technology we do now!
You sure do have to take advantage of the nice weather when you can. Can’t believe you had 70 degrees and then snow again! Crazy. I am going to check out the quizmaster trivia we are looking for something else to w my crew. Have a good week and stay well!
You bet I do try to take advantage of any and all good weather! I’m hoping this was our last snowstorm though…
Confession: We stopped watching Uncut Gems because it was so stressful and I couldn’t really get into Adam Sandler not being funny. I heard so many good things about it but I just couldn’t get into it.
I really need to get Max one of those beds. He’s be in heaven! I’ll have to keep that in mind once this is all over and they start shipping again.
Great week of workouts!
It was a stressful movie for sure! A bit too violent for me too..but I stuck with it. It was definitely weird to see Adam in that sort of role, but he did well.
Max would love a cozy cove!
I’d like one of those Cozy Coves for myself! We didn’t get the snow today, but it started raining shortly after we got back from our walk this morning, and has not stopped. But, the grass is the most beautiful shade of green 😉 Great week for you, you’re doing awesome staying so active!
Haha, I know, right? I want to crawl into the cozy cove now and take a nap 🙂
I’m having the same issue with the paths being so crowded on nice days. Even yesterday, when I went early, there were a lot of people out. My run was tough–part of it, I think was me being tired and the rest was being stressed about what was happening on the path.
I like the idea of the mile races–sounds like a great way to get faster!
Sounds like you had a similar run as me…just didn’t go well, but I think it was the stress of the crowds and probably just cumulative stress overall!
That snow is crazy! Your pups look so cute in the cozy coves! What a great idea. I got an email from Chew suggesting we place our monthly order early since they are running behind — I thought that was nice. D.C. is trying to get some roads open for extra exercise use — I think word got out what a great idea that is.
That’s great that Chewy sent a reminder! Glad D.C. is following Minneapolis’s suit!
The one-mile race series sounds perfect right now. Oooh those Cozy Coves look sweet! I’ll bet Ozzy dog would love one….and his birthday is next week. May have to wait til this pandemic is over though.
Ozzy would love a cozy cove! Both of our pups are curled up in theirs right now!
Those Cozy Caves look great. Can they come out with human ones? I think we all need them with all the chaos going on. I bought chalk for my neice and nephew and my SIL has had the most fun with it I think. Can we explain to mother nature that we don’t need all the seasons in one week?
I hear ya! I need a human size cozy cove…
The weather has been nuts! Time for summer to stick around.
That 1 mile race series sounds fun (but challenging!) Ive seen others doing 1 mile races and its a good challenge since its not something we would usually race. Great job staying so active during this crazy time!
Totally! I rarely push myself that hard…a 1-mile is tough!
Oh, look at those sweet pups, all snuggled up! So cute!
Great runs and workouts for you. I think it’s great to have something on the schedule, even if it’s virtual.
I am craving pizza and I think we’re going to order some once the Easter leftovers are gone.
I’m always crazing pizza, haha!
Yes, it nice to have some sort of goal on the horizon!
Ah – the cozy coves look amazing!! I’m going to check out that quiz game too. Looks so fun (and the queen, haha!). Great workouts this week. Darn that snow!
Haha, yes, we were graced by the Queen herself, joining our trivia 🙂
I wonder if my cats would like the cozy coves? Are they only for dogs? Great job on your runs this week! I’ve said it before and I will say it again but I love your determination to to keep on running/training. Part of me is taking it very easy because, well, there is nothing to train for. Right now I run outside just to get a chance to go outside. There aren’t many people out there anyway (I run in my neighborhood) .
Maybe cats would like the coves! I remember when we had cats, they preferred to be on top of things, rather than inside of things 🙂 But the vizslas LOVE to curl up inside the coves!
Oh your dogs are so funny! Bless them! Lovely to see your hard work continuing, sorry about the crowds, though, that’s really stressful. I’ve found I can’t do any formal running work as the minute i stop concentrating on people one pops up to avoid! So I’m just concentrating on running in as much nature as I can and stopping to look and listen when I need to. Stay well all of you xx
Good plan! Running in nature is the best 🙂 Stay well!
I’m also still training as though my summer race (a 50K) will be going on, though I did change my goal race to one a few weeks later.
Dogs are so funny about their beds! Kara has one she refuses to lie on at all – she’ll sleep on the hard floor right next to it.
Haha, dogs are good for entertainment 🙂 We love them!
