What a week…
This was definitely the week that the coronavirus became “real” for a lot of us.
For me, that looked like this:
- I’m now working from home from my office job
- The first race of my running club’s race circuit, a small local 8k, which was supposed to be on Saturday, was cancelled on Friday
- Almost all of the athletes that I coach have had their races cancelled; lots of work redoing plans and figuring out what’s next.
- And of course, the big news in the running community is the postponement of the Boston Marathon. (And London.)
Assuming things are under control by the fall, you could now potentially run 5/6 of the World Majors in about a month and a half:
All of the cancellations and postponements are disappointing; I know first-hand what it’s like to have a marathon (and trip) cancelled (i.e. Antarctica 2018) but hopefully these measures will help slow the spread and help our health care system cope with the disease.
I did see that the Antarctica trip that we went on is cancelled for this year. In fact, Marathon Tours has cancelled their next six trips. We are still waiting official word that our Bhutan trip and marathon are cancelled. I’m sure they will be, so I’m considering registering for the Fargo Marathon, which is also in May. But I’m hesitant to register for anything yet, until we know where we are in a few months!
It’s hard to know what it is I’m training for at the moment and I know many other runners are in the same boat. I think this article from Runner’s World says it well- “How to Run Safely During the Coronavirus!” We can still run outside (or on my basement treadmill) safely. So run, I will!
Here’s how this week week in training for the ‘unknown’:
Monday: 7 solo miles before work. Discover Strength 30 minute 1:1 session after work. Discover Strength is still holding training sessions; they aren’t doing any hands-on adjustments or shaking hands. They are cleaning equipment before and after each use. They are still open for business, so I plan to keep going for now.
Tuesday: First attempt at a speed workout since Atlanta; 3 miles easy, 6x (3 minutes on, 2 minutes jog), cool-down to about 8.3 miles.
The 3 minutes fast were supposed to be around my 8k pace, but it was a challenge! Definitely some residual fatigue in the legs from the marathon. (If you missed my recap of the Atlanta marathon, catch up HERE!)
Wednesday: Easy 5.3 mile run before work.
Thursday: Rest from running, Discover Strength after work. I’m taking part in Discover Strength “Body Comp Challenge” again; I did it last June and surprisingly made a lot of progress in a month. Of course, when I went in last week to do the “Bod Pod” again, I was right back to where I had been at the beginning of the challenge last time; I think that must be my homeostasis, so to speak, but it still a fun challenge to try to see what kind of improvements one can make in a month. I’ll be running as much as normal and will do two strength training sessions a week, but the workouts will be just a bit more intense than usual. Additionally, we are connected with a nutritionist for the challenge. You are encouraged to track your food via “My Fitness Pal.”
My daily protein and calorie goals were provided from the reading in the “Bod Pod;” the Bod Pod looks like a big egg that you get into for about a minute and it measures percentage body fat and muscle, also giving information on daily calorie goals.
Friday: Easy 7 mile run before work. Friday was my first day working from home; I had to cancel our Rover (dog walker) since I’ll be working from home indefinitely. But the pups are used to a mid-day walk! So I did get out over lunch for about 30 minutes of fresh air with them. It’s nice to have their company!
Saturday: Since the 8k race was cancelled, my coach changed my schedule to “a maximum of two hours of running,” which translated to 13 miles for me. We had a great group of girls at run club and it was a lot of fun! 13 miles at a 9 min/mile average.
I followed up the run with a Daily Harvest smoothie; here’s my $25 off coupon code if you’re interested in trying them: RE-YT75RVG
That afternoon, Dustin and I took a cocktail making class at Norseman Distillery, which was a blast. (There were only 8 people in the class and everyone was careful not to get too close to each other.)
Sunday: 5.3 miles at an 8:30 min/mile pace with Dustin.
Summary: 46 miles of running, 2 strength training sessions. Overall a solid week back to running regularly post-Atlanta. Feeling good and healthy and hoping to stay that way!
I really hope all of you are staying healthy and safe during this stressful time. It’s great to have the ability to stay connect virtually and support each other; this link-up hosted by Running on the Fly and Confessions of a Mother Runner ‘s is a great way to do so! Check it out below:
Yes the real winner of social distancing is our dog. She’s so happy now that she has stay at home parents and will get a regular lunchtime walk in addition to our nightly walk. And the kids are insanely happy that school is out for a while. Life is good and we’ll get through this.
I like your attitude 🙂
Not only have all my spring races been cancelled or postponed, but now CrossFit is closed for 2 weeks. They’ll be posting workouts online, so that is a good option. Let’s see if I do it! LOL. Tough times for all of us, but at least we can keep running!
I will have to go into work, although they are talking about telemedicine. That would be interesting!
My gym where I strength train- Discover Strength- is also closed, but are thankfully posting workouts for us! So much for my month-long body comp challenge…I think that’s technically on hold for now.
Glad you’re feeling good post-Atlanta! It’s so weird having the entire calendar (training and otherwise) wiped clean. It was a tough week here in Chicago and I’ve heard this coming one is going to be even worse. Cheers to hunkering down and working from home!
So strange not to know what’s next!
I haven’t gotten any word on working from home yet…but I could easily do so. Max would LOVE that 😉 I had not thought about all those World Marathon Majors happening (almost) all at once. We’ll survive this…we’re runners, right? We can do hard things 😉
Appreciate the positivity Kim!
My dog is going to be in heaven for the next 3 weeks at least. Someone is going to be home every single day. Or at least I think he’ll be in heaven. Maybe he likes the quiet when we leave? 😉 I have three races coming up but the first isn’t until the end of May. Who knows what will be going on by then.
Fingers crossed things are normal by the end of May!
Folks like Rover walkers are going to be those least noticed but so impacted. Glad you can get a lunch walk in while WFH. Also, WFH here and haven’t navigated that piece yet.
COngrats on a solid week — cocktail making seems an appropriate capstone.
I didn’t really want to be training coming off my knee so the spring pause (only Cherry Blossom personally) is coming at a good time, but I’m so sad for all of those with goal races.
I am considering still having them come walk..maybe meet them outside the house, just to keep the pups socialized with new people and to keep the Rovers paid. 🙁
Hadn’t even thought about the pup socialization thing. It’s been interesting to see the fog parks here since dogs don’t understand social distancing while their humans attempt it. Imagine not warm enough there for that?
Great update. I’m glad that the races are doing the right thing and cancelling/postponing. I have a lawyer friend writing a book about the Law of Running, and there is a section regarding the legal provisions in race registrations such as cancellation refunds, etc. He has lots of new examples he can add to that chapter now!
Sounds like an interesting upcoming book!
I say training is never wasted. We will all get back to our races soon. We do have a fantastic community to connect with and thanks for being a part of it
Good point!
it’s been a topsy turvey week for sure, and there’s so much uncertainty over how long this will last. Love the dog bed!
Topsy Turvey is right!
It’s hard to know just what to do. I suggested to my husband that we go somewhere different to walk the dogs instead of just around our neighborhood, since it’s a somewhat nice day, but he’s still reluctant. “They” said you shouldn’t go anywhere. I think we should before we really can’t!
Agreed! I’m running outside as much as possible. Even in San Francisco, where they are on “shelter at home” lockdown people can still run solo and walk their dogs.
The race I have on Sunday has been cancelled but I’ll still do the run as planned. Worried that my May Marathon (which was to be my first) will be postponed. But will continue training as planned and run the distance on 3rd May, either officially or unofficially. Thanks for linking the Runner’s World article – I’ll check that out now!
Oh, your first one..what a bummer! Fingers crossed things are good to go by May!
That new WWM schedule is bananas! Kudos to anyone that is able to run all of them!
Similar to you, I’m also working from home for the next 2 weeks. I usually work from home 1-2 times a week but doing it for 5 days will definitely be different! I hope I don’t go stir crazy lol.
I know! I’m kind of jealous, but you’d need to have been registered for London and April already, AND NY and Chicago and Berlin…you would have already had a full schedule, now just condensed. But man, what bragging rights for anyone who does it!
It’s hard to train when you don’t know what you’re training for, but if you’re like me, you just like to run so you don’t need a specific race to motivate you to get your runs in.
I took a bartending class in college at a local bar and it was so fun! I still use a few of the recipes they taught us.
Stay safe out there!
Totally! I like to run, so I’ll just keep running 🙂
Hopefully we will take from this how important it is to be healthy. Great Update.
Thanks!
good week for you! the bod pod and your challenge sounds interesting! I think your dogs may be happier with you at home than our cats are with us – they all have a face like “why are you guys still here???” . Ron’s working from home full time but I have to go in every other workday (my team is rotating so we are always with the same person every time. If someone gets ill then exposure is limited). The office is a ghost town. I bet the cocktail class was fun!
Well, the challenge is on hold for now with the gym, Discover Strength, closed…
Glad we had one last fun night out before everything closed..!
I’m glad I saw below you were considering keeping your dog walker on – I have a good friend who is one and her bookings have been OK this week but she’s very worried they will all disappear. We are still running in twos and threes here, keeping our distance, mainly so if we get into any trouble we can help each other rather than need to interact with someone else. Stay safe!
Ugh, my heart hurts by all the people affected by this.
I work at a bank, and I’ve been told it’s business as usual – except many of my coworkers will be working at home, so we are distanced. But I’ll still be in the office 3 days a week (my normal schedule) and it’s life as usual at my other job too (self employed tech person). I’ve really enjoyed having my kids home though! We have a Bod Pod at our local university. It sounds like a very interesting tool!
Sounds like you’ll be okay with your job for now, that’s good to hear!
