I’m still feeling really nervous about posting about it, or even letting myself get too excited. After all, I’m publishing posts with the same title that I wrote a year ago…
Fingers crossed that the next 5 weeks are healthy and injury-free!
A few people have given me a hard time about not getting outside to run when I’m supposedly training for Antarctica.
Yeah, I won’t be heeding their advice.
I would much rather show up in Antarctica unprepared for the winter running than not show up at all. I, for one, have not forgotten about last year’s broken leg and cancelled trip!
Additionally, I’d like to think the previous 14+ years of Minnesota running will have prepared me enough for the conditions I’ll face. My goal right now is just to stay healthy and actually get to go on the trip this year!
Speaking of the broken leg incident, next Sunday will be the one-year anniversary of that fateful day. I need to do something to commemorate the occasion. Any ideas? My sister wants to do a slow-motion run across the exact spot I slipped. Seems dangerous!
Okay, on to my weekly recap! Training was entirely indoors this week, due to lots of snow and ice and cold in Minneapolis.
Monday: 5 miles easy on the treadmill before work. After work, I took an introductory “Discover Strength” training session. My friend Vicki has been raving about these workouts, so I decided to give it a try. It’s a really intense 45 minute strength workout, either one-on-one with a trainer, or in a small group of 3 other people. The trainer pushes you to failure on a variety of moves, with the idea that you can accomplish a lot in a small amount of time.
It was pretty hard- I was very sore afterwards!
Tuesday: 5 miles after work on the treadmill.
Wednesday: 5 miles before work on the treadmill. That evening, I had a work event at the Norseman Distillery; we had a meeting first and then took a cocktail class. It was great fun!
Thursday: Well, after the cocktail making class the night before, I was too tired to run before work. I had a second Discover Strength session planned for 6:15 pm, so I went to the session and then ran on the treadmill at home after the workout. (5 miles.) Running after strength training was not a good idea. I felt like my legs just wouldn’t cooperate!
Friday: 4 treadmill miles after work.
(Here’s a little part of the mural by my treadmill that you don’t usually see, as its blocked by the treadmill- signs pointed towards the locations of several different marathons that we’ve run!)
Saturday: 10 treadmill miles. My first double-digit run after the Houston Marathon 3 weeks ago! (Catch up on that my recap of that race HERE.)
Sunday: Another 10 miles on the treadmill. Rather than bumping up quickly on the long runs again to prepare for Antarctica, my coach is having me do two ‘longish’ runs both days on the weekend to build for this weekend and next, and then one 20 miler after that.
I hope the weather is better for that 20 miler so I can do it outside, but if I have to do it on the treadmill, I’ve done it before and will do it again!
Summary: 44 miles of running, 2 strength sessions.
I’ve been doing a ton of purging and organizing in my home recently. How did we accumulate so much stuff?? This weekend during my organizing, I realized that I have nearly 20 pairs of Oiselle rogas- just a bit excessive!
Not to mention all the Oiselle distance shorts, Rabbit shorts, Patagonia shorts, lululemon shorts, and many other random pairs of shorts.
Clearly, too many running shorts!
Is anyone following Marie Kondo’s recommendations for folding when it comes to your running clothes? I would love to see a picture of how you’ve done it! I followed her advice for folding for my shirts/tanks, but not my shorts or my socks yet.
That’s it from me this week. Thanks for reading, and be sure to check out all the other great weekly recaps that are a part of HoHo Runs and Taking the Long Way Home ‘s weekly recap link-up!
I do not blame you at all for playing it safe! Next Sunday, I would be even more cautious. I do NOT like your sister’s idea! Is that “RUN” sign in your house too? So cool. I can purge Marie Kondo style, but I have no patience for the folding!
The RUN sign is in the same room as my treadmill and mural 🙂 There’s a funky store in Minneapolis where you can buy old store signs or pieces from them, so we bought the R-U-N and my husband rewired them so they are motion-sensor; it turns on when you walk into the room!
The folding is definitely something I am not sure I will continue…it looks great now, but just not sure if it will be maintained 🙂
I don’t think you’re at all silly for training inside, and anyway, whose business is it anyway? You do what feels right to you.
LOL about the shorts. Just substitute Skirt Sports . . . seriously, it’s an addiction. I’m constantly purging, but they just keep coming out with such cute & functional clothes/skirts!
Haha, I know! My husband was joking that all this purging is just making room for more purchases 🙂 But it really is internally rewarding to have everything organized, even if it doesn’t last!
Thanks for the kind words Judy, I will continue to run inside for now where I know I won’t slip on any ice!
I am probably the last person who has not given Marie the time of day LOL That said, I have all of my running gear on a couple of shelves in “my” closet, and everything is folded in half (lengthwise) than in half again, and then rolled. That way, I can see every color (if they are stacked flat, on top of each other, they overlap and things get hidden). They are also sorted by long-sleeve, short-sleeve and tank. I sound like an OCD addict LOL I think you should do something to commemorate the “anniversary”…..maybe do a victory jump… Read more »
It sounds like you already have your own Marie Kondo method going on 🙂
I’ve been purging my running gear too! I listed a few pieces of my InknBurn in an exchange group I belong too. Sold 2 pieces. I may need to turn to Poshmark or Ebay.
I think you should do a happy dance for your inauspicious anniversary. Wrapped in bubble wrap!!! Fingers crossed that you get through the next 5 weeks!
There’s a Oiselle gear sale/swap on Facebook that I need to get into…hoping I can do the same as you and try to sell some!
Bubble wrap 🙂 for sure.
LOL – all my running stuff is jammed into dresser drawers. In my defense, I run alone, before work, and sweat profusely, so I harbor no illusions that neatly folded running clothes would gain me anything!
Looks like you are bouncing back great from the marathon – that’s another advantage of your high mileage: makes recovery easier since the marathon is a smaller fraction of your overall workload.
Thanks Eric! Yes, I feel pretty good post-Houston. More sore from the strength training classes than the marathon, ha!
Running after strength training always leaves me feeling like I have Bambi legs. It’s a good way to learn to run on fatigued legs though. I think you should wrap yourself in bubble wrap for the next 5 weeks just to be on the safe side. 🙂
Good point! Good practice on tired legs. but I swear my legs felt disconnected from my body 🙂
Love that photo of Tilda! 🙂
Totally agree with you on playing it safe and running on the treadmill, especially with ice outside! That cocktail class sounds like a lot of fun – I would love to do something like that!
I haven’t tried Marie’s method for folding my running clothes just yet because I figured it would be tricky!
Thanks Kim! Tilda loves the snow. Me, not so much 🙂
your dog with the cute little shoes oh my! Adorbs! I am sure you are nervous about the race and will continue to play it safe for the next few weeks. Bubble wrap?? 🙂
Thanks Deborah! Matilda hates the booties at first, but then realizes that they actually keep her feet warm and then forgets about them.
Anyone giving you a hard time clearly does not live here. It’s absolutely treacherous out there! Last winter I tore a tendon in my foot slipping on ice so I’m also extra cautious and will not mess around with it when it comes to running! You’re being smart!
Oh my goodness Sara! A torn tendon sounds so painful. Be careful!
Compared to you breaking your leg, mine really wasn’t that bad! It didn’t tear fully through so I was in a boot for a month. Could have been a lot worse! But I don’t want to do it again, that’s for sure! So treadmill it is! 🙂
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your choice to run indoors. Miles are miles as far as I’m concerned. And, given what happened last year, I can totally understand being super cautious. Hopefully, your next 5 weeks will be uneventful!
Yes! Preach 🙂 Miles are miles. It’s still running.
Antarctica? Oh wow! That sounds amazing. I’d be playing it safe too. I don’t run outside much for fear of falling on ice. I’m fine with that 🙂 That’s a nice collection of shorts! I have a large collection of sports bras. They are just the Target C9 variety, but it’s helpful to have a bunch instead of doing laundry all of the time!
Thanks Lisa! Yep, I was supposed to run it last year and then broke my leg. It was so disappointing!
I love the sign posts of the marathons! That’s such a cute way to remember them. I don’t blame you for training indoors. Better safe than sorry. For the one year, I would say treat yourself to a new running outfit to celebrate being able to run…. but looks like you have plenty 🙂
Yep, better safe than sorry!
What a fun sign for the marathons
I’ve folded some of my clothes Marie KOndo style, but my running shirts are basically in a heap in the bottom drawer. Oops. It saves space well for pants, sleeping tees though. I draw the line at socks — or apologizing to them
Wow, people have some cojones.
Look forward to seeing how you “celebrate” your leg’s anniversary
Haha, yes, I haven’t apologized to my socks yet 🙂
I can’t believe people have given you a hard time – but some people just like to be “right” don’t they, like the person who’s said my rest plan between my mara and ultra has too much rest in it and I’ll forget how to run and lose all my fitness. I like to think we do know ourselves, and will ask for advice when we want it.
Back to back long runs are going to feature there for me, I think they’re a great way to practise running when fatigued.
You have got this. And I’m pretty jealous! Antarctica!!!
I would like to think that most people would understand why I’m running inside these days!
Back to back long runs are definitely a staple of ultra training!
It’s so embarrassing but I think I officially have more running outfits to choose from than non-running outfits for work or casual outings! How did that happen, LOL! Whoever is telling you to run out in the snow needs to relax – if it was me wanting to do Antarctica (from Botswana, no EXPERIENCE of running in snow, than maybe there would be need for some concern!) But for you, no! You’ve got this! As for your sister’s idea of that slow-motion run, that has me a bit nervous! But I think the day should be commemorated somehow!
Good point Shathiso- you might need to get a little experience on the snow and in the cold, but I’ve been dealing with it for years; I’m just a bit more conservative about it this time around for good reason 🙂
I am all about using the treadmill when it is icy or especially cold! The back to back ten milers are tough- good work! I like the plan of using those to build to your 20 miler but get recovered from Houston.
Thanks Laura! Treadmill is still running!
Yes, these past two weeks have been treadmill runs for me too. It has been impossible to run with the wind chill. And the footing has been so poor that the heart rate doesn’t get any higher than fast walking.
Totally agree about dividing the long run over two weekend days. It can challenge the body but still allow you to recover from the marathon.
You beat me on the weekly mileage. I was at 42 miles!
Sounds like a great week for you Shelly!
Yes, the footing makes it hard to run normal anyways, so I’m more comfortable on my treadmill right now, thank you very much 🙂
I would definitely be playing it safe too! It’s too risky, especially after what you went through last year…
I hope the weather clears for your 20 miler! I cannot imagine running on a treadmill for that long.
This morning was super cold (61 degrees…) I put on my long sleeve shirt and lulu shorts; then, I thought of you training for the Antarctica and made me laugh at how this attire would look silly in your eyes. Freezing at 61 degrees. ha!
Love the mural!!!!
Oh Eri, you make me laugh! 61 degrees sounds amazing!
I would be super cautious too. Much better to get to the start healthy than to take a risk on slippery surfaces.
Uh those people who are giving you a hard time for not running outside need to mind their own business. Definitely better to be safe than sorry! I’m the worst at purging my running stuff although I sadly threw away my favorite “arm warmers” (they were cut-off tube socks) and a pair of stretchy gloves during the PHX marathon on Saturday.
Fingers crossed you can get outside for your 20 miler, but hey, if it has to be on the treadmill, so be it 🙂
