Hi all! Did you read my recap of the 2017 TCS New York City Marathon? Catch up here!
I’m linking up as usual with Jess from Jess Runs ATL. Join us!
(I am also linking up with HoHo Runs/Mississippi Piddlin, who host similar link-ups to Jess and mine. Check them out!)
Monday: Total rest. We flew back from NYC this day.
Tuesday: [solidcore] class. It felt great to do some strength!
Wednesday: First run back! Just an easy 5 miles in the morning with my friends Christie and Aaron. Even though it was daylight savings last weekend, it’s still very dark in the morning. Definitely using some of the gear I talked about in this post!
Thursday: I ran with Dustin after work, 7 miles at an 8:35 min/mile pace. My coach had suggested a short tempo, but my legs weren’t ready yet so I ran a little faster than ‘easy’ but not tempo.
Friday: Flapjack Friday at Mill City Running! 5.75 miles total. So, so cold! I mean, I know it’s Minnesota, but this was even cold for us for November. True temperature was in the teens but the “feels like” was single digits. Brrr!
Saturday: 14 mile long run with the Calhoun Beach Running Club. It was much nicer than the day before, sunny and in the 30’s. Great running weather!
Later that day, Dustin and I took a cocktail making class at Constantine. Good times..with a little bit of learning 🙂
Sunday: My younger sister Laurie was visiting; she was mostly visiting my older sister, but she joined me for an 8 mile run Sunday morning. (Okay, she did 7 and then I did 1 with Matilda.) 7 was the longest she had run in awhile. She did great! My friend Christie hopped on for a few too.
So great to catch up over some easy miles.
After the run, she headed back to Iowa, where she lives. Dustin and I met some friends at Penny’s for coffee and a crepe and then checked out the Holiday Market at Sunnyside. It’s basically the same as the Linden Hills Farmer’s Market, just inside a heated tent instead of outside. It was great! I picked up a few items 🙂
Summary: 1 solidcore class, 40 miles of running, all easy pace running
I’m going to be ramping up quickly for the Three Bridges Marathon December 15th! Anyone know anything about Little Rock, Arkansas?
Join Jess and me for our weekly link-up, details as follows:
Wow you got right back to running! I thought I was the only one to have such a short recovery haha. Nice job
Well, my next marathon is in 5 weeks! I didn’t race NYC, just enjoyed the experience 🙂 I’ll hopefully be racing the next one!
I thought it was cold here but it looks freezing there!
It’s much better now- up to 50’s this week! Just an unwelcome cold spell for Minneapolis 🙂
I can’t believe you’re going to run another marathon! You are a machine!
I’ve heard really great things about 3 Bridges, though.
Really? Please do tell! What have you heard? I don’t know that much about it. I won an entry and hotel stay at a conference for RRCA.
Congrats on TCS!! Whew you are right back in to the swing of things with your training. You recover quickly! How fun is that cocktail making class! I wish we had that here.
We tasted ALL the cocktails that we made, which was a lot, but I did learn quite a bit as well 🙂
Wow, no rest for the wicked (fast runner!). Nice recap – the cocktail class looked fin. I’ve been doing some wine classes – fun topic to learn more about!
We took a similar cocktail class in the early spring/summer and it was totally different types of drinks. This one was fun as it was very much ‘winter’ themed.
Do your wine classes have a particular ‘theme’? I’ve taken a few but there is just SO much to learn…I wish I retained more of it!
I’ve been doing a few classes through Twin Cities Wine Education. Jason Kallsen does them – he’s the guy that selects the wines for Red Cow. Most of his classes are narrowly themed, and are fun and educational without being snobby. This Monday, I’m attending one on the Founding Families of Oregon Pinot Noir. So we’ll taste amazing wines and learn about how Pinot was established in the Willamette Valley.

I’ve never been able to jump back into running without a week off after marathon. My legs didn’t want to move! lol! Props to you for getting it done. And in frigid temps. What’s up with the sudden. cold? We had that too!
I would normally take a full week of no running, but since I didn’t race NYC and have another marathon in 5 weeks, it’s time to get back to it!
The weather in Minneapolis is looking much more tolerable this week. The cold spell last week was brutal- too soon!
I didn’t realize you weren’t racing NYC- so impressive how quickly your body let you jump back into running!
I had thought about racing NYC when I first started training, but the more I heard from people, the more I realized it just isn’t a PR day for most everyone. I had a much better experience just running it easy with no pressure. I still had the goal of keeping it under 4, but that’s about it. The late start, i.e. fueling to run from 10-2 was hard on me. My metabolism just isn’t used to that! I think I got a lot more out of the experience but dialing my pace back a notch 🙂
Doesn’t really sound like a recovery week with logging 40 miles a week after a marathon. Good job!
True. I had planned to at least squeeze in some yoga or a massage, but it didn’t happen. Everything was easy paced though, so it felt like a decent recovery.
I’m surprised that you were able to run so quickly after the race – that’s amazing!
Hopefully my body holds up! I’ll take a real break after Arkansas.
Literally LOLed when I saw your title “recovering from NYC” knowing how much you had ran from Strava. HA. Nothing like recovering with 40+ miles. 🙂 Good luck with the build for Three Bridges!
Whoops 🙂 You totally called me out! It was all easy miles though! No workouts 🙂
Congratulations on NYC! While I’ll probably never run it, I do love to watch it every year …so inspirational! How fun to get a chance to run with your sister …I keep thinking one day I will be able to convince my sister to take up running! 🙂
Thanks Teresa! NYC is a ton of fun to watch on TV 🙂 Good luck with your sister! I bet she’ll love it if she has someone like you to run with!
A cocktail making class sounds very interesting! I love when I get the chance to run with my sister. She is the one who inspired me to try this crazy, addictive sport in the first place. Congrats again on NYC. Thanks for linking!
The cocktail class was great! A fun afternoon activity…but I needed a nap after, haha 🙂
We had almost identical temps on Friday in Iowa…single digits with the wind chill. No fun ;-(
No fun at all! I have a feeling this winter is going to be harsh…
I’m going to try not to think about the fact that your recovery week is heavier than my peak week….LOL. Nice work Jessie. Looks like you are ready for winter running!!
It wasn’t a ‘traditional’ recovery, true, but I will actually recover after Three Bridges!
