It’s time for my weekly recap of training for Grandma’s Marathon 2016! It was a big week in mileage, but still lots of fun. Here’s how it all went down:
Monday: Easy 5.5 miles with my new running partner Nordica. She had run 22 miles the day before, so she only wanted to do 5.5. After we split, I grabbed Matilda and we did another 2 miles for 7.5 miles total. I had a double run on the schedule, so another 6 miles after work for 13.5 miles on the day. All easy and super enjoyable.
Tuesday: My “big” workout of the week: 2 mile warm-up, 4 miles at a tempo pace of 7:30, 2 mile cool-down. My average over the 4 miles crept closer to 7:40, but overall I felt pretty good.
Wednesday: Easy 4 mile run with Matilda in the morning. Barre class at The Barre after work. I had not been there in so long, but it was fantastic! Check out this older post about how great barre is for runners. At a barre class, I basically do all the exercises my PT wants me to do, but I’m way more willing to do them at a class set to fun music!
Barre is back in my life! I love, love [solidcore] but at this point in my Grandma’s Marathon training, it’s a little harder to fit it in without it hurting my running a little. Barre is easier on my body but still a great strength workout.
Thursday: 6 easy miles in the morning with some friends, and then 3 miles after work with Matilda. We ran to Run n Fun to buy a new fuel belt as my old one had seen better days. I needed one for my long run on Friday. Well, I might write a whole post about it, but the one I purchased (which was THIS ONE) was a HUGE failed fit. It didn’t stay velcro-ed at all. HATED IT so much.
Friday: I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to squeeze in my long run. 18.5 miles. I needed to get my long run out of the way because I had races both days of the weekend.
I had company for the first 7 (love my running friends) and then listened to the Hamilton soundtrack for much of my solo miles (can’t get enough!)
When I got back from my long run, I took a quick selfie with Matilda. Doesn’t she look pumped for her race the next day??
Saturday: The Fast & Furry 8k (race recap to come!) Spoiler alert, Matilda and I got second place for women with a time of 36:16, or a pace of 7:18 min/miles. I was pretty pumped about that time, especially after a long run the day before.
With warm-up cool-down, we did 7 miles total.
Sunday: The Salomon CityTrail Loppet 10 mile (recap to come!) I knew my legs would be tired, so I didn’t race this, but ran it as a fun trail run for my recovery miles. 10 miles at a 9:15 min/mile pace with 1.5 miles to warm-up and 0.5 miles to cool-down, 12 miles total.
Summary: 71 miles total and 1 strength class (barre)- yowsa! Big week for me but I generally feel pretty good and excited for the marathon on June 18th!
UPDATED TO ADD!

Thanks to everyone else who shared my blog with their friends and family!
Busy week! Sounds like a lot of fun! I’m excited to read your race recaps when you get them posted. 🙂
Matilda is working on her guest post 🙂
That’s a great week of training (and races)! Nice work!
Thanks Andrea!
Great recap. I always appreciate your recaps – it shows all the hard work behind your great results, and especially how you vary your workouts and fit in all those miles.
Thanks Eric. I’m glad you find some value in them! They help me reflect on the week and see what’s working or not working and patterns, etc.
It is a lot of miles! Last week wore my out and this week, I’m definitely tired. Almost taper time!
